Rivers are exceptionally varied and dynamic habitats forming invaluable wildlife habitat. In Northamptonshire they vary from the fast flowing streams rising in the southern and western uplands of the county, to the wide, slow-moving lowland River Nene. These watercourses form, either in their own right or in association with other habitats, a vital nature conservation and wildlife resource for the county.

The reserve, designated in , consists of two lakes, a woodland, river banks and areas of grass and scrub in which some ponds have been dug. At Aldwincle another tributary, called Harpers Brook, joins the Nene from the north west. Harpers Brook flows between gravel pit lagoons before converging with the river. There are moorings at Nine Arch Bridge on the Islip side of the river and just after the Locks about a half mile further downstream, adjacent to the flooded gravel pit of the Middle Nene Sailing Club.
